The Theodore Y. Wu and Chin-Hua Wu Lecture was established to honor the enduring legacy of two extraordinary individuals who shaped not only the Caltech community, but also the lives of countless students and scholars from around the world: Professor Theodore Y. Wu and his wife, Dr. Chin-Hua Wu.
Twenty twenty-four marked what would have been Professor Wu's 100th birthday and in celebration of his monumental contributions to science and education, the endowed Dr. Theodore Y. Wu and Dr. Chin-Hua Wu Visiting Professorship Fund was established. This initiative is designed to bring distinguished scholars to the Institute to teach, collaborate, and inspire our faculty and students.
Professor Wu was a towering figure in the fields of applied mechanics, aerodynamics, and fluid dynamics, and was known for his groundbreaking research and his extraordinary ability to inspire and mentor students. His work and his unwavering commitment to excellence set the highest standards for scientific inquiry, and his mentorship shaped the careers of countless students, many of whom have gone on to make significant contributions in academia, industry, and beyond. For all of us who had the privilege of studying and working with him, Ted was more than just a teacher and colleague—he was a guide, a role model, and a friend. What also stands out is his steadfast dedication to education and the scientific community—values that he and Chin-Hua deeply shared.
While Professor Wu was renowned for his research and teaching, Chin-Hua's contributions were equally transformative. After receiving her PhD in chemistry from UCLA in 1955, Chin-Hua spent close to 15 years as a research fellow in the Institute's chemistry department. She played an integral role in hosting and fostering the many visiting scholars that Ted brought to Caltech, creating a welcoming atmosphere of intellectual curiosity, hospitality, and community. Together, they were a powerful team, nurturing an academic environment that not only advanced the frontiers of knowledge but also built lasting connections across generations of scholars.
The Lecture is held annually and is made possible through the generosity of family, friends and colleagues who have contributed to the Dr.Theodore Y. Wu and Dr. Chin-Hua Wu Visiting Professorship Fund. To make a gift or learn more, please make a gift online or contact Laura J.
