Tree Mill

Shop hours are 10 am–12 pm and 1–6 pm, Monday through Friday. To see if the shop is open, please visit the ME Shop Google Calendar. Students, faculty, and staff may use the shop during these hours as long as there are a minimum of two people in the shop at all times. One member of the shop staff must be present in the shop if any of the machine tools are to be operated. If no member of the shop staff is present in the shop, students, faculty, and staff may work at the benches with hand tools.

The shop is open to the entire Caltech community. There are, however, a few restrictions. ME 170 must have been completed prior to using any of the machine tools in the shop.

Since this is the Mechanical Engineering shop, ME students, faculty, and staff will have priority on the machines. This priority applies to time on the machines and to the completion of projects by the shop staff. Others will be accommodated as availability and time permit.

When classes are in session (such as ME 71 and ME 72), the shop will be occupied heavily by students from these classes. These students will have priority over all other shop users when their class is in session. If a class is meeting in the shop for lecture or lab, the shop will be closed to all others until the class is over.

Tree ornaments

One mill and one lathe are set aside for the exclusive use of graduate students. They are separated from the rest of the machine tools and are not generally used by the undergraduate classes. All graduate students and faculty must have completed the safety course in order to use the graduate mill and lathe.

ALL shop safety rules will be complied with at ALL times.

The shop staff has the authority to deem that a student, faculty, or staff member is not working safely. The shop staff has the authority to ask them to stop using the machines and to leave the shop.

Materials and Fasteners

Materials

Various sizes of aluminum, steel, stainless steel, copper, brass, and plastics are available in the shop in limited supply. Most all common sizes and types of fasteners are available. A small assortment of metric fasteners is also available. These materials are for use by the students when a small quick job must be completed. For larger quantities of materials and fasteners, it is requested that the materials be purchased from either on-campus stores, or through one of the many catalogs that are available in the shop.
